<실천을 실천하기 Practicing the Practice #00: 준비운동 Warm-Up>

강지웅, 김상하, 정어진, 황예지는 매일 불길한 이미지를 찍고, 내려받고, 공유한다. 공부방, 작업실, 전시장, 출판소, 사랑방, 만남의 장소로 수개월간 이용될 화이트노이즈의 프로그램을 시작하기 전 첫 기획으로, 우리는 만국기를 걸고 《준비운동》을 벌인다.

불길함은 점점 더 익숙해지고, 재난의 징후는 더 이상 우리에게 경종을 울리지 못한다. 마음이 들뜨던 유년기의 운동회 날, 눈높이보다 한참 높은 만국기를 올려다보던 기억을 떠올린다. 근심 없이 달리고 던지던 그때와는 달리, 지금의 우리를 달리게 만드는 것은 어쩌면 세상을 향한 근심이다. 근심 가득한 눈으로 올려다보는 만국기는 경종을 울릴 수 있게 될까?

이런 고민 아래에서 우리는 스마트폰으로 찍고 수집한 불길한 이미지를 한데 모았다. 불길한 이미지를 도표로 정리하며, 우리가 수집한 저화소 580장의 사진은 온라인에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 K-컬트 밈과 비교해보고, 무질서와 규칙을 동시에 발견하고, 셀피나 반려고양이 사진에 달리는 ‘귀여워’라는 라벨에 대해 질문한다. 우리의 불길함은 장례식이나 홈파티처럼 아주 사적인 순간부터, 광장과 미술관, 뉴스화면에 이르기까지, 예상 가능한 범주를 벗어나지 않는 보편과 개인적인 특수가 뒤섞여있다. 이러한 사진들에 대한 응시를 위한 이 준비운동은 앞으로 화이트노이즈에서 펼쳐질 조금 더 커다란 사진에 관한 이야기를 듣고 감상하는 데에 도움이 되어줄 것이다.

As the first project inaugurating WHITE NOISE’s program—through which the space will serve for several months as a study room, studio, gallery, publishing house, salon, and gathering space—we begin with Warm-Up, hanging strings of flags of our time,recalling those once suspended above our heads during childhood sports festivals. Unlike those carefree days of running, what drives us today seems to be our anxieties about the world itself.

With these in mind, we gathered the ominous images we had photographed and collected on our phones. Organizing 580 low-resolution images into a visual chart, we compare them with K-cult meme imagery, tracing both disorder and underlying patterns while questioning labels such as “cuteness,” so casually attached to selfies or photographs of pets. Our sense of ominousness spans deeply private moments—a funeral or a house party—to public squares, museums, and news footage. Warm-Up—an exercise in looking closely at these photographs—prepares us for the larger conversations on photography that will unfold at WHITE NOISE in the months to come.
